Our new Battlefields database

We have upgraded the list of Scottish battlefields on our website, to create a more user-friendly and easily-maintained databased. The list now takes the form of a scrolling table, listing sites in alphabetical order according to their most common name (or the name under which they are designated).

The list also now features a simple check-box identifier as to whether the site current has a monument, is marked by any plaques or interpretation panels, or has a dedicated visitor centre.

Our list includes a number of battlefields which are not currently designated by Historic Environment Scotland, including several smaller skirmish sites, and sites whose location is completely developed (eg Aberdeen 1644) or details are contentious (eg Athelstaneford 832). That is because these too may be deserving of commemoration and interpretation as significant cultural sites. We welcome other suggestions, such as the two 1722 skirmish locations proposed by one of our members recently.

All designated sites have a link to their HES page, which features the key documentation users may wish to consult.
