Spott village remembers the fall of Dunbar (1650)

This year’s anniversary of the Battle of Dunbar (1650) was marked by a series of events across several days, led by the SBT’s director Dr Arran Johnston.

A walking tour followed in the steps of Cromwell’s attack, leading the group from Dunbar Parish Church to the battlefield Monument and the Prisoner’s Stone. The walk formed part of the East Lothian Walking Festival.

On Saturday Arran gave two illustrated talks in Spott church, where visitors were also able to visit a mini-exhibition the SBT installed into the churchyard’s watchhouse. Both talks were well attended, and formed part of the East Lothian Archaeology Fortnight.

On Sunday, a specially-themed service at Spott church preceded a short commemoration in the churchyard. Following a few suitable words and prayers led by the minister, a wreath was laid where the remains of some of the battle’s fallen are believed to have been placed.

The SBT is grateful for the support and enthusiasm of Spott church and its community, and looks forward to exploring further possibilities with them to help ensure this nationally significant landscape remains valued and understood.
