Respects paid at Culloden (1746)
/It was our honour to join hundreds of others on Culloden battlefield last week. Our wreath was laid by Arran Johnston, in honour of all those who fought and fell in the Jacobite conflicts. Arran went on to present a fascinating presentation in the NTS visitor centre, exploring the role of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the battle, and contextualising it within the context of his proven leadership capabilities. Another presentation, by Darren Layne, examined evidence about recruitment techniques deployed by the Jacobite army in 1745-6.
The Culloden anniversary is always a well-attended and poignant event, but despite its international profile and high-quality visitor centre this battlefield faces the same challenges as all others as development continues to threaten its integrity.
